OPINION: ‘Annual postbox fees are exorbitant’

Suddenly in 2018 pensioners were hit with a charge of R270 per annum for a postbox.

DEAR Editor,-

We retired to the coast 21 years ago and as there were no street deliveries in Umtentweni, we were forced to apply for a postbox. We paid a key deposit and the box rental was free because there were no street deliveries. Suddenly in 2018, we, as pensioners, were hit with a charge of R270 per annum for a postbox and believe everyone else has to pay R450? If you don’t pay by the end of March, you lose your postbox.

The postal service has deteriorated so much over the past few years, we no longer send our grandchildren birthday cards. In most cases, posted items never reach their destination,

Our assessment rates statements have not been received for three months and for our Telkom account we have resorted to debit order.

We are most grateful to our son for giving us a second-hand computer and setting us up with email, but I feel very sorry for other pensioners who already battle to make ends meet and now have another unexpected expense.

I believe the post office is now going to be responsible for government pension payouts? Heaven help us!
