OPINION: ‘Unsafe lagoons deter holidaymakers’

I can guarantee you that my family and I will not be returning to the South Coast and the word is spreading fast.

DEAR Editor,-

My family and I have all been terribly sick over the past week – to the point of rushing two babies and three adults to the hospital to be put on drips and given much medication.

On our various visits to the hospital there were at least ten other patients, all with the same symptoms and all of them had been in the Uvongo lagoon. Nurses said they saw up to 40 patients with the same thing in one night.

I believe an article was released on December 19 declaring that it was safe to swim in the lagoon. However, has anyone bothered to check the increasingly high rate of viruses at the hospital?

And not to mention pharmacies running out of medication and having to restock shelves three times last season. This is not normal – and not good at all.

I can guarantee you that my family and I will not be returning to the South Coast and the word is spreading fast on how this is not a safe holiday destination anymore.

One man at the hospital said this was the second December he had had to visit a hospital and explained that he was selling his property due to this.

We drive past beaches and there are people still swimming in the lagoons because they are not aware of the problem. Most of them have children and babies who are at risk. Something needs to be done and it is the media’s responsibility to correctly inform the public.
