DEAR Editor,-
Ugu South Coast Tourism and the tourism fraternity welcomes the introduction of new and seemingly stringent by-laws, as introduced by the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality.
We are convinced that proactive measures to fine and/or prosecute those who transgress these by-laws will set a good precedent and send a clear message to the public that a no-nonsense approach will be the norm in our areas. Certainly the hospitality sector will welcome the tough approach.

Many decades ago, Singapore was a humid swampy, unhealthy and congested place which tourists often avoided. The authorities there took a firm stance and introduced tough legislation which they enforced and today that island state has transformed itself to one of the best run places on earth – with millions of tourists flocking there.
Margate and our other hot spots can become even more user-friendly, as long as a sustained application of by-laws occurs. A fine of up to R25 000 and/or jail time should be a deterrent if people are in fact brought to book and word gets out that a new dimension to public management is continually taking place.
The public will soon adjust to the norms and that will do great things for the reputation of our district and our holiday ‘capital’ Margate.
First and foremost, residents and visitors want to be in wholesome environs when they take leisure time out and they rely heavily on local authorities to provide such environments.
If this can happen here and the by-laws are enforced to the full, I am confident that our guests will heap praise and return year after year. And that is good for our tourism economy and the many hundreds of locals who are employed in the industry.
Again we laud the RNM for taking these steps and trust that soon the ‘Singapore effect’ will occur here.
