DEAR Editor:-
For the last 19 years, February has for my husband and I been a very happy month. It meant coming to South Africa – to Shelly Beach, for our well-deserved holiday.

We meet our friends and visit our Literacy Centre in Johannesburg, where at least ten thousand poor children from Alexandra have learnt to read, write and improve their mathematics skills.
This little paradise is unfortunately changing and not for the better. Despite having increased security measures and having a live-in domestic helper, we have had four break-ins over the last six months.
The thieves have become more sophisticated now and even come during the day with tools to cut through iron and burglar bars. It is a nightmare.
Police and authorities should have a good look into this situation. All our friends, who, like us, bought properties, employed people and spent some very good money, have now left.
They’ve sold their houses and turned their backs on South Africa.
Please do something about it! We have not seen a police patrol car in the area for years, but have heard and read about a prevention campaign to stop this onslaught.
I will be very frank: Our beloved South Africa has lost a lot of respect abroad. There are too many political scandals and too much crime.
It is time to act!
