OPINION: ‘Find an area suitable for all parties concerned’

Protection Services were forced to let traffic through to prevent a gridlock or serious accident.

DEAR Editor,

I would like to know if any councillors have ever visited St Mike’s beach when a function or entertainment is being held at this beach?

The reason I am asking is surely they would have seen that the number of people attending these popular functions far exceeds the space required.

Last weekend, we had cars parked on the side of Marine Drive towards Shelly just before Knox Gore Road, which is a problematic intersection at the best of times and it just made matters worse.

Protection Services were trying to prevent cars turning left towards the beach at the St Michael’s Sands Hotel and the sheer number of cars wanting to enter this road just compounded the problem until they were forced to let traffic through to prevent a gridlock or serious accident.

Parking at the beachfront is limited, so a large number of people were forced to walk along Marine Drive to the venue and some of these pedestrians were under the influence of alcohol, which made matters worse.

Is it not time to find a more suitable area for functions – an area that would make it easier for authorities to keep control of traffic and any other illegal/dangerous activities that may happen on the day?

Let’s try and make this a win-win situation for everyone concerned – have fun but also keep everyone safe and happy so that they come back again.
