OPINION: ‘There’s a fine line between use and abuse’

Power is neither good nor evil. It just is. It's what people do with power that matters.

DEAR Editor,-

The public office carries a tremendous amount of responsibility, and there are sadly those among us who are all too willing to selfishly sacrifice the safety of others in order to prove a political point under the guise of being ‘helpful’.

The distinction between ‘use’ and ‘abuse’ of power is a matter of perception. Abusers generally don’t view themselves as ‘abusing’ power, merely ‘using’ it to pursue their goals.

To use power means getting benefits for being powerful. So your rights (at least according to your own criteria) become more rightful than the rights of the less powerful.

Even a well-intentioned, ‘good’ person can abuse power if they are unaware of the negative consequences of their actions.

You can choose your actions, but you cannot choose the resulting consequences. Ask yourself the question: If the roles were reversed, would you be so willing to put the lives of your loved ones at risk in order to prove a point?

If, God forbid, something bad happens or someone gets killed as a direct result of your actions, I sincerely hope you can live with it on your conscience.

‘Power is neither good nor evil. It just is. It’s what people do with power that matters.’
