OPINION: ‘Shona’s article is of major national importance’

The inconvenience experienced by this grounding is indeed immeasurable.

DEAR Editor,-

Many thanks to journalist Shona Aylward for the article ‘Turbulent times for Cemair’.

This was certainly more enlightening than what we have been fed since Cemair flights were grounded.

As a frequent flyer with this airline, I was affected last week when I had to visit Gaborone and fly via Durban. The inconvenience experienced by this grounding is indeed immeasurable.

I am booked to fly to Johannesburg soon and am uncertain what to do. Getting to and from Durban is a schlep! I am also booked again in three weeks time.

Your article is very disturbing and one can only wonder how Miles van der Molen obtained a licence to operate this company!

I am no expert on aviation, but am aware of the facts and have flown several times now between Johannesburg and Margate on the regional jet-CRJ.

When I Googled this aircraft, I found out that the runway at Margate is in fact too short for this aircraft – according to the aircraft’s specifications.

When I confronted one of Cemair’s ground staff at Margate with this fact, asking if the runway was not too short, the answer was ‘Well, yes, technically so!’

I think that the article is of major national importance and would suggest sending this info to a major national newspaper like The Sunday Times.

Keep up the good work, Shona.
