DEAR Editor,-
I am currently walking around in a surgical brace after a compression fracture to a vertebra. And I am also getting on in years.
Last Saturday my husband and I were shopping at Shelly Centre when we decided to have brunch before going home. I went to do some shopping at the supermarket and my husband went to our favourite eatery.

When I got to the till, I couldn’t get my trolley into the space and a young Afrikaans woman behind me offered to assist. We laughed about my driving ability being impaired due to the brace.
I got all my shopping onto the belt and then handed over my bank card, but sadly the machine declined my card. At first I thought I had punched in the wrong pin number so tried a second pin, which was also declined.
After the third try, I was in a state of panic, not having cash with me. No luck. The supervisor was called and I asked if I could leave the trolley in a safe place (it was full of stuff I had bought earlier) plus the items I was attempting to purchase.
I was told the trolley would be stored at the entrance to the office while I dashed off (uncomfortably) to the restaurant to get my husband’s bank card.
After ‘dashing’ back, I was horrified to find no trolley in the designated space. While I stood looking round in anguish, I was approached by a very nice young Afrikaans man who addressed me in Afrikaans.
I explained I wasn’t familiar with the language and he said “Tannie, I paid your bill and your trolley is here for you.” I was flabbergasted and stuttered about how I could repay him.
He smiled and said that it was no problem – his gift. His wife (the woman who had previously assisted me) looked over with a lovely smile and a wink.
There are some really good people out there – and one elderly couple would like to express their appreciation for this act of selflessness from this previously unknown couple.
My husband suggested I have a sticker made saying “If this woman is bothering you – phone this number ……”
