OPINION: ‘Cough up’ for do without the coffin!

We were told if we couldn’t afford the R4 500, we’d ‘have to throw our father in the grave without a coffin!’

DEAR Editor,-

I would like to share my concerns about a funeral home on the South Coast. My father died on Tuesday, February 27, and we started making arrangements to bury him.

We lodged a claim with our funeral home the following day (Wednesday) and they collected his body that afternoon.

We were scheduled to collect my late father’s body on the Friday afternoon and when I called the funeral home to arrange a time for collection, I was informed by the administrator that we had to pay an additional R4 500 for my father because he was ‘over size’!

The policy included 1) coffin; 2) tent; 3) groceries, and 4) mortuary.

The woman at the office told my family that if we couldn’t afford the R4 500, we were going to ‘have to throw our father in the grave without a coffin!’

I asked her to show us where my mother signed agreement that should a family member be ‘over size’ she must pay extra. We could not get proof of this in the policy.

I’m worried about other people, like the elderly, who would not be able to afford the additional R4 500 for an ‘over-sized’ coffin.

I believe the public should be made aware of such policies or rules.

Funerals, especially for black families, are extremely financially draining and the before and after costs related to the funeral are unbearable.
