DEAR Editor,-
What a few weeks of doom and gloom us South Coast residents have had to endure – most of it reported in local papers:-
– the world’s worst outbreak of listeriosis due to ‘gungy glue stuff’ called MDM mixed into polony, frankfurters, etcetera – a batch of which was recently imported from Brazil (after the new government lifted the embargo on importation of foods from Brazil);

– Port Shepstone Vehicle Licensing Department has only one computer in working order and can only deal (rudely) with 50 people a day;
– ‘cable theft’ in the Port Shepstone CBD left areas of the town without power and the Home Affairs office was closed for several days;
– no aviation fuel at Margate Airport for nearly two months, apparently due to non-payment by RNM of fuel bills. They say it’s due to ‘delays encountered in finalisation of the tender process’? Well, why didn’t they start earlier?
– a serious ‘crime wave’ hits the South Coast; murders, stabbings, robberies, house break-ins, tourists attacked, and a murdered wife stored in a chest freezer for days;
– beaches and lagoons closed due to bacterial pollution; public swimming pool closed because a pump is not working and the water is green;
– car thefts ‘rife’ up and down the coast;
– the usual weekly carnage on our roads due to appalling driving and no visible traffic policing; heavy trucks using the R61 instead of the highway; robots not working; intersections covered with litter, broken concrete and peeling paint;
– ANC members threatening to close down certain South Coast municipalities because … well, who cares? It’s all about the money;
– EFF marching and protesting against poor treatment patients are receiving at Port Shepstone Regional Hospital;
– thanks to Ugu’s continued dismal performance, water woes continue up and down the South Coast, breakages, burst pipes and leaks every day; Ugu staff threatening to strike (yet again); a private contractor appointed by Ugu withdrew after receiving death threats;
– houses built without planning permission; noisy religious gatherings held in residential areas;
– Port Shepstone as usual is dirty and ugly with broken pavements, litter and filth everywhere, double-parked cars, beggars at robots, collapsing ‘brick’ pedestrian crossings, urine and faeces visible on pavements;
And weekly stories of potholes not filled, verges not cut, empty plots not cleared, bins not emptied, litter not removed; urinating and drinking in public and on beaches continues – un-policed!
The slow and steady ruination of what was once – and not that long ago – a paradise.
