OPINION: ‘Food prices leave pensioners reeling’

Many pensioners cannot even afford one healthy meal per day and are scrawny from malnutrition.

Dear Editor,

During the last two weeks the food prices have increased exorbitantly, a few foods by more that R10. As an elderly blood donor, I must ensure that my Hb, blood iron level meets the minimum requirement, so I take a teaspoon of Marmite every morning.

Now, with the latest hike and another expected increase from April 1, I will be unable to purchase this vitamin B supplement and hence, no longer be a blood donor.

(One donation saves three lives.) My pension, static from 2000, when I was obliged to take early retirement, owing to injuries sustained during voluntary work as a reservist, cannot cope with a stipend of less than R4 000 per month.

Our president and his cabinet are not exposed to the stress of such a financial situation, which cannot offer any solution.

Many of us pensioners with professional qualifications, who cannot even afford one healthy meal per day, are scrawny from malnutrition.
