OPINION: ‘Selective repairs smack of nepotism’

The call centre then refused to give me details as to whom I could speak to for a status report.

DEAR Editor,-

With reference to the letter submitted to the Herald by Arthur Edwards last week entitled ‘Great team work by all involved’.

During the second week of December 2017, I reported a massive water leak which took a few days to repair because it required substantial excavator work to repair the leak.

The Ugu reference number for that leak is C171211/10. Extensive damage was done to Barracuda Boulevard in Hibberdene and my driveway was destroyed in its entirety, with approximately 90 percent of my paving bricks back-filled into the hole that was excavated.

I was informed that the leak reference number would suffice for follow-up regarding both the road and my driveway repairs – to no avail.

At least one of the officials mentioned by Arthur Edwards was on site during the time that the water leak was repaired as many surrounding residents and holidaymakers had already been affected for a few days. It cannot therefore be claimed that nobody senior was/is unaware of the substantial damage caused.

In attempting to follow up the repairs in February 2018, I was given another reference number by Ugu (C180213/29), but they could not give me any status as to when or if the repairs will be done based on the initial reference number.

The call centre then refused to give me details as to whom I could speak to for a status report. They also indicated that I should not ‘hold my breath’ regarding the timing of the repairs, or whether it would in fact be done at all.

Subsequent follow-up phone calls were also fruitless.

My questions are: 1 Whom do I contact to have the LONG OVERDUE repairs done? And, 2 Why does a driveway and other related damage get repaired in less than a week in an area (Lugg Circle) where an ANC PR councillor resides, but where I reside, no repairs have been done over a period longer than three months?
