DEAR Editor,-
We often read about road carnage in the media and a lot is said about it, but in reality very little, if anything, is done. It appears there is total anarchy on our roads. We sometimes get road blockades defending these perpetrators – whose defence is they are been targeted.
We have people driving through red robots, overtaking on solid barrier lines and stopping anywhere to load or drop off passengers and this is certainly not confined to only taxi operators. It appears that using the emergency flasher units of vehicles gives the driver the right to stop and pull off from the side of the road as they see fit. Slow moving traffic (including tractors with passengers) and breakdowns of unroadworthy vehicles just add to the problem for these hotheads.

Having lived on the South Coast for 30 years, I have witnessed several instances of total disregard for road rules and a lunatic fringe of certain drivers. All roads on the South Coast are affected. The worst of all to me is the Izotsha road to Marburg, which I use daily and seldom (if ever) see traffic police monitoring this road – except for at the robots.
It’s a lunatic mindset of some drivers believing it’s their right to get to their destination ahead of everyone else without considering the possible consequences of their actions. I would like to ask whether these drivers want to be part of a road accident statistic and whether they can live with the consequences if someone is killed as a result of their recklessness.
Would it make any difference if one of your passengers is a family member. Yesterday the driver of NPS 67377, with a child in the car, overtook me across a solid barrier line, forcing me to slow down as there was oncoming traffic and he would not back off.
Hotspots are the robot at the Izotsha crossroads and 200 metres either side of the Izotsha river bridge near Riversmead Poultry Farm. I appeal to the traffic department to police this road and take appropriate action against those persons who break the law and do not consider other people’s rights to use the road.
There are also many pedestrians using this road. The sides of the roads are so overgrown, it forces them to walk in the road (obviously to get to work), so I also appeal to the authorities to do something permanent about this as I can see an accident happening. It appears an attempt has been made to create a pathway for pedestrians, which I commend, but why has this not been extended? Or will this only be done when we have a couple of fatalities? I noticed that during the laying of this pathway, the kerbstones had to be relaid a couple of times.
