OPINION: ‘Dave should do his research before engaging’

I must assist Dave with information that as mayor I do not walk around with CVs of people appointed at the municipality.

DEAR Editor,-

Last week I read one of the best grandstanding and playing to the gallery pieces of all time written by one Dave Snashall. In his shallow piece, he says nothing other than exposing himself as a person who is too lazy to read and research before engaging on any topic. He claims that after my announcement of the new CFO, no CV was provided. He does not mention where was I supposed to provide the CV as per his expectation.

I must assist Dave with information that, as mayor, I do not walk around with CVs of people appointed at the municipality. If he was serious about knowing more about the CFO, he would have contacted the relevant offices at municipality and would have received information. It seems it was too much to do because this was not going to assist his shallow letter to the editor.

In all places where I introduced new CFO Simon Dlamini, I never omitted to mention his qualifications and vast experience in finance and in local government. I always mention that Dlamini has 18 years’ experience, 12 of which were at senior management. Dlamini is a UKZN graduate with a Bachelor of Accounting degree and a post-graduate certificate in accounting. He is currently studying towards a post-graduate diploma in taxation. He has vast experience in both the public and private sectors and has worked as CFO for Umzumbe Municipality and Umkhanyakude District. He has also worked for the office of the Auditor-General and knows his financial story.

This is one person I can never be shy of presenting his CV in public. In the few months he has spent with the municipality, he has come up with a very strategic document that seeks to turn the financial situation of our municipality around, thus leading us to a clean audit.

Dave needs to understand that we take ourselves very seriously and take the community we serve very seriously. We are not running a ‘Mickey Mouse’ institution.

We are running an over a billion-rand institution entrusted with water and sanitation. We are doing our best to ensure that we give the best service with the limited resources that we have.

We have two professional engineering technicians, five professional engineering technologists and one certified engineer. There is no cadre deployment here. These people went to school to qualify themselves to work at water service authorities.

If Dave had any interest in finding this information, he would have found it because it is not even classified.

I do understand though why he did not make an effort to find it – because it would have derailed his intentions of receiving attention and cheerleading from the crowd with his hot air arcessions (sic).
