DEAR Editor,-
On several visits to a local supermarket, I have noticed the packer standing on the freezer lip in order to reach the top shelf of the diary and fruit juice section.
What concerns me is: What germs are being transferred from the packer’s shoes onto the shelf … and possibly onto the public?

One could argue that it’s a refrigeration section and therefore germs would be killed from the temperature these units emit in order to keep the items fresh. Even so, it’s not a very hygienic practice.
The other issue is the safety of the packer who could slip. Sometimes they even stand on plastic milk crates, which could easily break and cause injury.
Why can’t packers be supplied with a ladder which would make their jobs easier and safer and make the public happy that dirty shoes are not being exposed near food products.
