OPINION: ‘Does anyone work at Sassa?’

The entire department and Sassa organisation is totally uncontactable.

Dear Editor,-

I recently spent the entire day trying to contact the local South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) office in Marburg.

Just to find out if there is a particular day of the week on which one should apply for a state pension.

After about four hours of both numbers simply ringing I got bored and started phoning other numbers: Local hotline, national hotline, Durban head office, various numbers there… either ringing phones or “this mailbox is full” answers. I then phoned Sassa offices in Pretoria to no avail… ringing phones or “this mailbox is full”.

I then started in on the Social Service Department in Pretoria, including Minister Shabango’s office; the customer care line: the media liaison line and eventually, I worked my way through the MEC list using their cellphones.

The entire department and Sassa organisation is totally uncontactable.

I even tried the Sassa Fraud Line… there is nobody anywhere? Where are they all? Is there a way to raise this in parliament in some way?

On another issue, is there any way the press is going to be able to explain to the public what has actually been happening about the water situation here. I mean the real story… the truth?

The power of the press is all we have left in this country.

Never have I felt so stressed about this country.
