OPINION: ‘Sadly nothing has changed’

By-laws are totally ignored and actions go unnoticed, unhindered, and with no consequences whatsoever!

DEAR Editor,-

The recent ‘by-law’ enforcement initiative on Margate main beach was desperately needed and long overdue.

A large sign was strategically placed at the entrance to the main beach with all the by-laws and appropriate penalties thereto, for all to see.

The first weekend thereafter (June 16) saw law enforcement and the SAP out in numbers doing an exceptional job ensuring that the by-laws were adhered to.

Subsequently the situation has sadly reverted back to (ab)normal, specifically on Saturday afternoons.

Groups of drunk youngsters drinking and lurching all over the place, urinating, littering, etcetera, etcetera, with broken and empty bottles left in their wake.

The preferred spot for this lawlessness is the entrance to the Olympic swimming pool. By-laws are totally ignored and actions go unnoticed, unhindered, and with no consequences whatsoever!

Placing of these by-law notice boards SERVES NO PURPOSE at all if they are not policed and enforced on a permanent basis.
