Butthead’s Beat: ‘Hacking’ up the course… literally

Hopefully, the Wild Coast 'gophers' who trashed the course last weekend choke on a 'floater'.

Bill Murray and his gophers in Caddyshack couldn’t have done a better job than the ‘hackers’ who carved up six Wild Coast greens last weekend.

No kidding! The greens on the back nine were sliced up with warnings scrawled on flags saying it was… ‘just the start’.

For those who haven’t seen the classic golfing movie, Murray is the greenkeeper at a swanky American golf course which is being destroyed by ‘gophers’, a burrowing rodent akin to our moles. So he tries to blow them up, but not with much success. Even touchy bunny-huggers giggled.

However, nobody is amused about the ‘rodents’ who sabotaged the Wild Coast, which is arguably one of South Africa’s best golf courses.

There were no witnesses, but fingers are being pointed at disgruntled staff who seem to have some axe to grind.

Talk about cutting one’s nose off to spite one’s face.

No course, no tourists, no work, no money, no food.

Whether anyone will be held to account is doubtful, but the midnight ‘hackers’ certainly threw golf course management into a mild panic as they were preparing for a Sunshine Tour event this week.

Amazingly, they managed to patch up the greens to some extent and the tournament is being played as you read this.

Sadly, this will be like water off a duck’s back, but our politicians and community leaders have to step up to the tee and emphasise that we need all our golf courses to generate wealth for the greater good.

We are blessed with 10 fantastic golf courses between Umkomaas and Wild Coast. Many of them are not particularly flush and are struggling to keep the courses on par with stiff competition further north.

Add to that, local golfers are tapped week after week to support fund-raisers galore for some charity.

Back to Caddyshack.

Another memorable scene took place in the club’s swimming pool where something brown and ominous was spotted bobbing about. The packed pool emptied quickly as someone shouted… ‘FLOATER!’

Switch to Bill Murray wearing a gas mask and fishing out the offensive object with a pool net.

Then he takes off his mask, smells the thing… and takes a bite.

It turns out that some kid had dropped a chocolate log.

Something similar happened to me and my young daughter in the baby pool at Sun City years ago.

Only this was the ‘real thing’. Holding her at arm’s length, I ran all the way back to our room gagging.
