OPINION: ‘Why is Sheppie allowed to look like this?’

There don’t seem to be any litter-pickers anywhere except occasionally on Sundays.

DEAR Editor,-

These disgusting photographs were taken behind Oribi Plaza, the main shopping plaza of Port Shepstone.

Sadly it is not unusual because the area usually looks like this.

This is not fresh filth and rubbish – it has been there for weeks and there is more and older rubbish down the bank behind the ‘recycling’ area towards the railway line.

Perishables, plastic and other garbage is dumped behind the shopping centre.

Who is responsible for keeping this area clean? Something MUST be done .

Tweni Ratepayers’ Forum had a meeting with the municipal manager and several department heads several weeks ago when the topic of dumping, litter and rubbish everywhere on the South Coast was discussed in depth.

I have been in touch with Superintendent of Cleansing, Sifiso Khumalo, via emails over the past few weeks, but the litter problem continues all along the R102 – and everywhere else.

There don’t seem to be any litter-pickers anywhere except occasionally on Sundays.

These areas must be cleared of litter every single day – it is not something which can be done only once a week (if this is the case).

Port Shepstone is deemed the ‘capital’ of the South Coast and yet it is allowed to look like this.
