Once upon a time… ignorance WAS bliss.
Now, thanks to a traffic jam on social media and a plethora of fake news sites, dinner table talk is all too often about emigrating to safer pastures.

A long, long time ago, when a few Dicks and Jannettes first packed for Perth (the destination of choice back then) they had to rely on traditional postal services to justify their cowardly move. The brave souls whom they left behind to ‘fart back’ (as former DA leader Tony Leon once said in an election year) merely had to use the missive to light the braai.
Well, the old fashioned ‘airmail’ letter has gone down like the proverbial lead balloon so now everyone e-mails… or shares fake sites, peddling over-exaggerated tales of genocide.
‘Hinnews’ in particular is a pet hate.
Do yourself a favour, block anyone who sends you anything from that site and you will be halfway to living a better life in good old South Africa.
Yes, crime is a problem… for everyone, regardless of where one lives! And the build-up to next year’s general election is scary if one takes all the grandstanding by politicians at face value.
But would you really want to live anywhere else? Watching the Dolphins play the Knights at the Port Shepstone Country Club cricket grounds this week was enough to convince one that the grass is still oh such much greener right here.
A disgruntled ex-pat who returned for a visit recently certainly rubber-stamped this opinion, although somewhat unwittingly.
For starters, she really wanted to believe that ‘Hinnews’ was the only ‘reliable’ source of ‘facts’ about her abandoned place of birth. It was like bashing one’s head against a Trump wall trying to convince her otherwise.
So what’s Scotland like?
“We’re so happy we left this country. We don’t even have to lock our doors.”
Yes, but what do you do over there?
“We look after an elderly couple. They are lovely, but changing adult nappies takes a bit of getting used to (hee hee).”
And when you’re not changing nappies?
“We’ve made some great friends in our local pub.”

Is that it?
“We can’t really afford to travel yet and it’s quite expensive. Summer is beautiful.”
And, as they say in that hit series Game of Thrones… winter is coming.
Then it’s getting up to go to work and back in the dark, being cramped up in a poky, stuffy flat watching BBC re-runs or camping out in a pub, abandoning your liver and playing darts.
