Butthead’s Beat: Dooby dooby doo… if you want to

Believe it or not, the late, great South African reggae musician, Lucky Dube, never ever partook of the substance now 'decriminalised' for private use. Go figure!

Pubs, clubs and bottle stores, relax!

My liver is still dedicated to you, in spite of this week’s ‘high’ court ruling ‘decriminalising’ dagga, weed, ganja or pot for private use.

Joe’s Lung, a TV documentary back in the early days of test patterns, convinced me to give up smoking then.

And, regardless of the so-called ‘medicinal value’ of puffing on a ‘spliff’, nothing will convince me to do so now.

The pungent smell does not grab me and a ‘roach’ (butt-end of the ‘joint’) burnt my lip the first time I tried it.

No, a good red wine or whisky are still my ‘relaxatives’ of choice.

Luckily, brandy has never been my thing as the company that produces one of the favourite mixes is also apparently investigating adding some cannabis extract.

No, that’s no load of ‘bull’, according to ENCA News. However, this new drink could also ‘give you wings’.

Local potheads can thank deputy chief justice Raymond Zondo (also of State Capture Commission fame) for the landmark ruling on Tuesday.

Hey ‘mon’… and a big up to our own Solly Bux who helped Justice Zondo get his legal qualifications all those years ago.

Who knows? If it wasn’t for Solly, Justice Zondo might have followed another career and a ruling by someone else might have gone the other way.

To recap a story in the Herald about a year ago, Solly, now a Port Shepstone pensioner, was running a supermarket in Ixopo at the time and fed Justice Zondo’s family so he could study law.

Butthead is not shy to take credit for bringing the two together again 40 years later at a lunch at Justice Zondo’s home in Hillcrest.

Both are very humble, principled and honourable men.

We have already witnessed ‘state capture’ exposed in great detail and there can be little doubt that heads will roll… eventually.

Bye-bye ‘Gooftas’.
