OPINION: ‘I will never be fooled again’

No more making allowances. Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.

DEAR Editor,-

I begin to stress when that call comes through. ‘Hello, are you home?’ Yes. ‘I am at the gate.’ Come on in. Would you care for a cappuccino, tea, sherry, cocktail? ‘No thanks, just popping in a to say hello.’

Over the years I have made allowances for things that disappear when having visitors over – knives, forks, spoons, ornaments, sunscreen, cooking utensils, oil paintings, etcetera.

This time round, I called the party concerned to say that they may have left a dud cellphone charger in the socket and taken mine, since I recall nothing it at the home of the party concerned and no one else had visited me in the last 24 hours.

‘It must have been one of your friends’ was the reply.

No more making allowances. Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.

So I am battening down the hatches. And if anyone wants to visit and enjoy my hospitality, the nearest coffee bar will be an excellent choice.

NO MORE MISTER NICE GUY
