Psalm 119:33-40 (New International Version)
33 Teach me, Lord, the way of your decrees, that I may follow it to the end.
34 Give me understanding, so that I may keep your law and obey it with all my heart.
35 Direct me in the path of your commands, for there I find delight.
36 Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain.
37 Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word.
38 Fulfill your promise to your servant, so that you may be feared.
39 Take away the disgrace I dread, for your laws are good.
40 How I long for your precepts! In your righteousness preserve my life.

The writer of the Psalm, has come to a place or moment in his life where he realises the need to be led by God in a big way, almost to the point where his very life depends on it.
He’s realised that the situation is beyond his control, power and understanding and so turns to the Lord in his time of need.
At first, he asks God to:
– teach him
– give him understanding
– direct him
Then he goes deeper, even as asks for God to:
– to help him be unselfish
– to help him value what is good
Then he looks ahead and asks God to:
– fulfil His promise to him
– take away the disgrace which he dreads
There’s a lot one can learn from that.
The key would be to realise that our own efforts outside of God’s leading and guiding and being within his precepts, don’t usually end up too well for us.
