OPINION: ‘Education opens access to opportunity’

‘Education is the most powerful weapon which one can use to change the world.’ - Nelson Mandela

DEAR Editor,-

The Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal wishes the province’s matric pupils all the very best as they begin writing final exams this week.

These exams are the culmination of 12 years of schooling and we thank those teachers who have worked selflessly to prepare pupils. In turn, we urge pupils to give of their very best.

A good education is critical in terms of access to opportunity and breaking the cycle of poverty that exists within so many communities.

In the words of the father of our nation Nelson Mandela, ‘Education is the most powerful weapon which one can use to change the world.’

The DA acknowledges those pupils in particular who are fighting against considerable odds, such as heading up families themselves and even studying by candlelight.

We also acknowledge that many pupils had to study at schools without a conducive environment.

We urge them to remain focused during the exam period so that they may improve their own and their families’ circumstances.

The DA will continue to fight for all pupils to have a conducive and safe schooling environment, educational opportunities and a successful matric exam period.
