Butthead’s Beat: Driver’s licence is plastic gold

Guard your driver's licence well. Renewing it is nearly a fate worse than death.

Yippee! I’m a legal driver again.

It took many frustrating attempts at both Sheppie and Umzinto, but a ‘temporary’ licence is finally in the cubbyhole.

Ho-ho-hopefully Santa will deliver the smaller, laminated card in time for Christmas, as was sort-of-promised by his little helper at the Umzinto Licensing Department.

I don’t even mind if they don’t wrap it.

After the rigmarole… the blood, sweat and beers… to replace it after a burglary some months ago, this new licence will become the most cherished item in my over-stuffed wallet.

No cash, but all other cards – banks, golf handicap, club, medical aid, pacemaker ID, Spar, Woolies, My School, Edgars, etc., etc., – took no time to replace.

Alas, not so the driver’s licence.

Sheppie was a no-go to renew, unless one was prepared to queue at sunrise, so Umzinto was the only other option.

Attempt No 1: Dodge potholes in main street. Find parking. Stand in queue to get forms. Fill them in and progress to another long queue outside some pokey office in prefab building at the back. Wait, wait… waaaaaiiiiit. Sign on prefab says: “www.kwikspace.co.za.” I kid you not (chortle). “Do you have a utility document?” Drat! Morning wasted.

Attempt No 2: Dodge potholes. Find parking. Stand in long queue again. Not moving. Huff, puff… what gives? “We’re waiting for eye-test forms which have to come from Pietermaritzburg.” Drat! Morning wasted.

Attempt No 3: Wow! Second in queue. Wait, wait…waaaaiiiit. Shake head and chuckle at “kwikspace” sign again. A pregnant cat saunters by. Sigh! Tap guy in front on shoulder: “Have you seen anyone else go into the office?”

“No.”

Knock, knock. No answer. Gingerly open door and peek inside. Empty!

Politely ask guy in front if he has a utility bill. Now first in queue.

An unsmiling official, with a spring in his step after a loooooong nature break, nods for me to follow.

Eye test, finger prints… done!

Relief all round.
