DEAR Editor,-
We came down to the South Coast for seven days’ vacation from November 12 to 19.
What a disappointment!

We really had to search very hard to find a friendly face. This includes shops in the malls and the small shops lining the South Coast, from Port Shepstone to Marina Beach.
The attitude identified is one of waiting for something bad to happen … not conducive to a spirit of vacation joy.
In three shops, assistants could not be bothered to help you – they are more interested in their cell phones than in helping customers.
On two occasions we left our would-be purchases on the counter after being informed (very rudely) that no card facilities are available, although signs at the door indicated acceptance of all major cards.
The condition of secondary roads like Marine Drive is, to say the least, shameful and dangerous.
Potholes are not being repaired and plants are left to grow into the road area.
The general appearance of streets does not support any tourism – sidewalks are dirty and old garbage bags filled with who-knows-what are strewn all over the place.
The South Coast can no longer be marketed as a friendly and sunny vacation destination.
In closing, I’m sad to say that I think that was the last time that I’ll travel all the way to the South Coast from Gauteng.
Nice knowing you South Coast…
