OPINION: ‘Road death toll requires urgent action’

Annually, KZN records the highest number of fatal road crashes.

DEAR Editor,-

As we fast approach the festive season, the Democratic Alliance (DA) urges the people of KZN to obey the rules of the road in a bid to reduce the horrific levels of carnage.

Annually, KZN records the highest number of fatal road crashes.

This senseless loss of life has to be curbed and the DA calls on KZN’s Transport MEC Mxolisi Kaunda to immediately:-

– Implement an integrated road safety plan involving SAPS, RTI and municipal traffic officers, to ensure efficient and visible law-enforcement during this period

– Embark on a mass province-wide road awareness campaign, and

– Adopt a no-nonsense attitude towards drunk and reckless drivers.

Curtailing the number of deaths in our province requires a multi-pronged approach. This in turn requires a proactive MEC and officials. The time for talking is over.
