While it’s difficult to find anything funny about this load-shedding business, South Africans are already so hardened by setbacks that we have learned to laugh in the face of adversity.
For example… we are currently facing stage one and stage two load-shedding. Now there’s a rumour doing the rounds that, when we get to stage five, Eskom workers will come to your house to blow out your candles.

Jokes aside, spare a thought for those poor, unfortunate Eskom foot soldiers who are doing their best to make their fat cat BIG bosses look good.
Put yourself in their shoes. You do all the work, sometimes in the pouring rain and in the dead of night. Thor, the God of Thunder, and irate consumers come down on you as there’s nobody else higher up to rant to.
And the guys with the multi-million rand packages at HQ just put their hands out to us, the taxpayers, and say: “We want more!”
In spite of Pravin Gordhan’s promises of power (heh, heh), there’s a distinct possibility that Santa and his trusty reindeer might overshoot South Africa in the dark this year.
All we can hope for is that those hard-working technicians don’t get so hacked off that they decide to down pliers.
Their bosses are probably all on holiday by now so it’s up to us, the consumers, to show our appreciation.
They are not to blame for this sorry state of affairs, so show a little kindness when you next see an Eskom worker trying to repair some aging infrastructure and take them a cup of eggnog.
So far, so good with our water supply (touch wood). Ugu workers, please, please spare us your tantrums this year.
No electricity is one thing, but another dry and grubby festive season will really spark a run on razor blades and neckties.
