OPINION: ‘Uvongo is not the ideal area for a campus’

Why not build it in the area around the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre where three main roads provide access?

DEAR Editor,-

I fully agree with the idea ‘Unisa campus for coast’ (SCH December 7) and it is most needed on the South Coast … but the locality?

1 Marine Drive cannot accommodate extra traffic for students at 15 000 travelling to and fro daily. The road is under strain at present and even more so in season with visitors arriving from all over and tourism is the South Coast’s major industry.

2 This land is mostly ‘swamp area’ and not suitable for building, which is why it was never incorporated into residential plans in the layout of Uvongo.

3 The sewerage system is already at maximum capacity.

4 Can we guarantee a constant water supply?

5 There are no conveniently situated student accommodation facilities and there will be a lot of students from all over KZN and Eastern Cape looking for cheap accommodation nearby.

The idea is great and must be supported, as it will also bring extra buying power to businesses on the coast and help the community.

But again, the location!

Why not build it in the area around the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre where three main roads provide access?

Please consider the impact – not just on the Uvongo neighbourhood, but to tourism on the South Coast.

I have already approached the municipality about creating a botanical garden on this land, as the wetlands and dry areas is most suitable.

An educational hall could be erected for student tours and there could be a tourism information centre, and a tea garden.

Furthermore, if a botanical garden is approved, international funding can be sourced due to the semi-tropical environment, and would encourage an international student exchange program.
