OPINION: Does Ray Nkonyeni Municipality care about Margate?
"We tried to wash our feet at the showers in the kiddies' pool, but, unsurprisingly, nothing worked."
I received a video taken by PrivateGuy depicting the pitiful state of Margate beach facilities.
Recently, my wife and I took a drive through Ballito – something we haven’t done for years. While the North Coast holds little allure for us, it was refreshing to see how clean and well-serviced the area is.
As I type this, we are at our holiday house in Hout Bay, having come back from a walk on the pristine beach. Before we left on holiday, we walked from Margate to Lucien. Eventually, my wife put on her flip-flops out of concern for cutting her feet on the multiple broken bottles strewn across the beach. We tried to wash our feet at the showers in the kiddies’ pool, but, unsurprisingly, nothing worked.
An African American sitting near the showers commented, “You guys gotta do better.”
Since the landlords and municipal officials’ meeting called by Surina Smuts, nothing has transpired.
This begs the question: does anyone at the levers of authority in Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) actually care, or are they simply too incompetent to do anything meaningful?
I say they must go, and go now. We cannot carry on like this.
In closing, some may think the old guard to which I belong will soon fade away. That may be so, but I’m training my youngsters and sharpening their teeth. So, RNM, ignore us at your peril.
