A few years ago the Two Bag Recycling Scheme was introduced to many areas. This means residents put recycling in a clear bag and rubbish in a black bag.
A compactor picks up the black bags for landfill at Oatlands while a caged truck picks up the clear bags for the recycling depot. A wonderful and simple idea but unfortunately one that is not widely used by the residents.
If you drive around the streets on rubbish collection day you will not see many clear bags put out. One of the main reasons is the difficulty in getting the bags.
JB Licence and Homemakers Hardware kindly offer their premises as a collection point for the clear bags but often they have run out and in spite of requests for more, the stock does not get replenished on a regular basis.
Over the holiday season the amount of waste that can be recycled is huge but no one has any clear bags. Without the clear bags the scheme simply falls apart and what could have been recycled ends up as landfill.
