One would think this could only happen in a place of extreme lavishness like America – an 18-year-old boy getting a R1.7-million Porsche 911GT3… for passing matric!
That’s what a proud dad, billionaire Robert Gumede (founder of IT firm Gijima), gave his son recently.

Even more astounding is that Rob junior was fooled into believing he was only going to get a lowly Porsche Boxter worth a measly R800 000. Then he turned around and literally went crazy on the family’s video posting when he saw his yellow racing car worth twice that amount.
One has to wonder what his dad will get him when (or if) he goes on to get a university degree. A Lear jet?
Oh well, if one has the money to splash out on the kids, why not?
Golf is obviously not his sport of choice, but there can be little doubt that the youngster will have the pick of the chicks.
Back in the day, that wasn’t so easy when the only wheels one had was a 50cc Honda Fury.
For starters, one wasn’t allowed to carry a pillion passenger on such a small motorcycle so we had to meet our dates at the popcorn machine inside the movie house.
That way, the girls also had to buy their own tickets to get in. That has probably changed today as the movie tickets are now cheaper than the popcorn.
One could also smoke in the movies then which made one look very macho.
However, that backfired badly on one occasion… literally.
A friend stubbed his cigarette out on the floor, casually put his arm around his date and started snogging (as we all did). Then we smelt smoke.
We looked back to see the carpet burning, the glow spreading up the aisle.
My friend hastily extracted his hand from his date’s blouse and escaped through the first exit.
