Butthead’s Beat: Butthead has left the building

After 48 years in the media industry, it's time to let loose on the world with opinion biased by age.

“The time has come, the Walrus said, to talk of many things:

“Of shoes and ships – and sealing-wax – of cabbages and kings.

“And why the sea is boiling hot – and whether pigs have wings.”

Lewis Carroll might well have been thinking of becoming a pensioner when he penned his famous poem, The Walrus and the Carpenter.

Like Lewis… and Elvis, it’s time for Butthead to ‘leave the building’.

Now to find out when and where they serve free coffee and cake at local supermarkets, insist on pensioner’s discounts, master the art of voicing opinion biased by age and pretending to be deaf.

I also plan to follow some advice I picked up on Facebook, to get up at 6am every day and drive around slowly (while still able) so I can make younger people late for work.

In the past 48 years, I’ve met and interviewed every president from John Vorster in the 70s to Cyril Ramaphosa today, movie stars like Spike Milligan, Peter O’Toole, Barbara Windsor and the lovely Joanna Lumley, singers like Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson and Tom Jones, beauties like Anneline Kriel, Glenda Kemp and her python, Oupa….

Maybe there’s a book in the pipeline, but first a new adventure into whatever comes my way.

My strategy is based on the ‘matchstick theory’, which was explained to me once by Durban Rotarian Gerald Sieberhagen.

In a nutshell, the average lifespan of a human is 80 years… or eight matchsticks, each representing a decade.

Six-and-a-half matchsticks already down. After 70, well, one might not be too energetic any longer, so take that matchstick away.

That’s half a matchstick left!

Five years to wreak havoc on the world and have fun.

Anyone interested in forming a movie club on Tuesdays at 10am?

Tickets are cheaper for pensioners and that expensive popcorn is a no-no anyway as it gets stuck in one’s dentures.
