EVEN though it was a seemingly slow fishing weekend, some good quality fish were reeled in on the South Coast.
Kayak fishermen had little to no luck and the game fish weren’t very active either.

The catches weren’t so grand, but the weather was still great, if extremely hot.
The current was strong, north to south and as a resuly shore fishing was fairly quiet.
Those on board Wotalotigot, including the skipper Wikus van Kraayenburg, were on something of a roll, with Wikus producing a monster-sized mussel cracker.
Nica Andreka a visitor from Brits, on board boat Wotalotigot, boated a beautiful 6.6kg soldierfish.
The black mussel cracker is a South African species of marine fish in the family ‘sparidae’.
These fish can grow up to 1.5m in length and weigh in at around 35kg.
These mussel crackers are found mainly in coastal rocky areas to depths of 80m. Their diet consists of hard-shelled invertebrates such as crabs and sea urchins.
COMPETITIONS
The Umhlanga Festival takes place this weekend (23rd and 24th) where anglers can fish for the biggest game fish on any craft – paddle skis, jet skis and boats. There are great prizes and cash to be won.

For the freshwater anglers, the popular annual Paddock Fishing Competition is due to take place at 30 fully stocked dams from March 29 to 31.
