OPINION: ‘Mall needs armed security’

Each shop at the mall should have at least two panic buttons, strategically placed.

DEAR Editor:

Firstly I would like to thank you for a fantastic newspaper. It’s so nice to be kept informed each week of what’s happening in and around little old Scottburgh.

I have no doubt after reading last week’s  Mail regarding the blatant daylight robbery at the MTN store at the mall that you will be getting plenty of comments.

My two cents worth is as follows after hearing what my lovely wife Sue said about the incident. She said that each shop at the mall should have at least two panic buttons strategically placed somewhere in the shop. The activation of one of these would cause an alarm to sound in the vicinity of the shop. The shop owner, if afraid, would sound the alarm once the robbers have left the shop. There should also be permanent and visibly armed police or armed security personnel on standby whilst the mall is open. Regular mall security guards should remain unarmed so as not to have their weapons taken from them by would-be thieves, as in situation such as this the thieves are high on adrenalin and can move at lightning speed.
