AH young love… it comes with great risk, a certain purity and a surprising, even upsetting, reality that it can quite suddenly alter the status quo among mates.
And I’m not talking about young adults looking to find a life partner, rather a trio of six year old boys whose playtime was rearranged by the arrival of a very cute little girl.

Cute girl took a shine to one of the boys – the one with the least front teeth, it seemed.
Before her arrival the boys had been racing around, running, chasing, wrestling, catching and sweating.
Then one broke the ‘bro’ code.
Not only did he talk to the girl, he was prepared to play with her, too.
Yours truly noticed the kid starting to cry, the others had bolted off somewhere. Cute girl stood next to the almost-crying boy.
“They said I love her,” he said, battling back a sob.
I’m no love guru, and any match-making I ever tried failed hopelessly. This was a big moment. The right words had to come out.
I looked him in the eyes and, trying not to laugh, asked: “Do you? Do you love her?”
He nodded emphatically, perhaps sensing redemption was possible.
“And you,” I said to the girl, “do you love him?”
She bit her bottom lip with her new top tooth. Then nodded, eyes huge.
A bit out of character for me, I fist-punched the air and said “yeah man, well done my boy there you go!”
That was all the encouragement he needed. He grabbed her hand and ran off to play.
A few days later, with cute girl back in Durban, the ‘bro code’ was restored, paper planes flying around during a church service before moms knew what was going on.
Will have to do a follow up on this one in about 10 years or so.
At the very least everyone’s front teeth should have grown out by then!
