AWKWARD moments tend to have a way of sneaking up on one in an unexpected manner.
Like that moment when you pop into a store you have never been in before and don’t recognise any of the staff but the owner greets you like a long-lost friend.

“How’s the photography going?” confirms he knows you.
But you still have no idea who it is.
I had to get my car’s brakes checked the other day and instead of waiting in the hot workshop, took a walk around town.
My wife had seen a craft shop she wanted to visit. “It’s just here around the corner,” she said.
On the way to the craft shop we popped in at a kitchen shop, and then a cupboard shop, which is where we bumped into my long-lost friend.
A long conversation ended with an agreement that we’d send specs and look at sprucing up the flat a bit. Death to fishmoths inhabiting old cupboards, we felt.
But I still didn’t know who he was.
Finally, I asked for a card. He gave me two, why I don’t know.
Instead of slipping it into my pocket, I snuck a quick look, confirming beyond doubt that I’d fail in an interrogation, probably sing like a canary, and can’t say stealth is a strong point.
It was my daughter’s ballet teacher’s husband. I also know his dad well.
I admitted I did not recognise him and there was laughter all round.
I also asked my wife if she knew him, she flashed a smile and says ‘yes, of course’.
After leaving I ask her how she remembered. Her secret? “I pretend I know everyone!”
So you didn’t recognise him? “No, not at all!” She liggled for about 30 seconds.
(Liggle: A laugh-giggle after having pulled off a semi-lie, the kind of thing no husband is clever enough to do.)
We never did get to or find that craft shop.
