DALE Steyn’s recovery from a potentially career ending injury to now charging in and bowling at 140km plus is impressive.
But it’s nothing compared to my own cricket comeback at age 46.

It’s been about 12 years, maybe more, since I last stepped onto or into an indoor cricket court for a proper game.
A friend has been badgering me for ages.
With the Cricket World Cup around the corner – and IPL on the go – cricket fever is in the air, and I finally relented, possibly against my better judgment.
I figured if some of those old boys can still make contact, so could I.
I stuck to my game plan of swing wildly, hoping that if I don’t know where the ball is going, neither would the fielders.
It seemed to work.
The first shot would have gone for four past point if there hadn’t been a net in the way.
The running was a bit of an issue.
I was panting after the first over (of four each pair gets to face).
My batting partner was enduro bike racing champion Wade Young, probably one of the fittest guys in the country, never mind Paddock from where he hails.
At the end of the second over, my butt was burning and my gluteuses were screaming maximus.
It was a case of grit, grin and run.
The bowling went okay and my finest off-spinners were not smashed over the boundary.
They can’t – such is the joy of indoor cricket.
In the field I even managed to hold onto a one-handed catch, but dropped a few and gave my skipper a few headaches as he tried to find a place to ‘hide’ me.
I mentioned I had a golf game coming up on Friday. He burst out laughing.
The next day, and few days thereafter, I knew why. I was stiff in places I did not know I had muscles.
Bring on the World Cup.
