DEAR Editor:
Lot 402 in Scottburgh South is what every city, town or village needs, a green belt.
It is the life blood of the area – not only does it give us a place for recreation, but it provides clean air.

By its very nature it absorbs the pollutants that are created by motor vehicles, factories and general city pollutants.
I cannot imagine anyone in New York ever having the audacity to think they could get away with trying to alienate part of New York’s Central Park! Can you?
Do not think for one moment that someone, somewhere did not sacrifice for us to have our green belt.
The Council did not buy the land, the land was donated by the developers of Scottburgh South to the people of the area.
Rates and taxes have never been paid on this site.
I have lived opposite Lot 402 for 40 years and in that time have had the privilege of being part of this wonderful environmental scene that takes place right next door.
We have a resident heron which calls that space home as well are the purple-crested loeries (turaco), fork-tailed drongos, weaverbirds, owls and hoopoe not to mention the red wing starlings, wagtails and laughing doves.
We have on rare occasions in the early morning had the wonderful privilege of seeing the tiny duikers grazing under the trees.
There is a family of mongoose who call this place home.
We also should not forget the vervet monkeys that live there as well, never mind the frogs, crabs and other creatures that live in the stream.
The area around the ‘green belt’ has both the NG Kerk in Glen Road and Church Alive in Minerva Avenue, both churches have on-site parking.
There is a parking problem every time there is a service or a function.
The NG Kerk has a capacity of 700 people and is often full to the brim.
The impact on the area would be huge should there be another place of worship added to the equation.
