Sue’s Views: Hip to be square

Having said that I have to admit that I too have had my glorious mutton moments, where I think I look pretty funky and rad until I am brought back to earth by my adult son.

I don’t know about you, but there is nothing quite as creepy as a middle-aged adult trying to act hip and happening.

Dress sense is one thing and if it rocks your boat to don flowing, tie-dyed robes and Jesus sandals or rock a pair of jeans – so be it, but in the name of all that is holy dress age appropriately.

I wince at women trying to squeeze their middle-aged bodies into young trendy outfits that their daughters and in some cases their granddaughters would wear.  It just leaves them looking a tad desperate and more like an extremely worn out teenager.

Needless to say the same applies when it comes to make-up. Those larger than life lips either drawn in way above the actual lip line or so puffed up with Botox look more Coco the clown than the long lost youthful pout of yesteryear.

As for the men …. some sage advice would be to step away from the hair products.  Nothing is more disconcerting than trying to hold a conversation with a man who has recently undergone a home hair dye job or opted for the classic twenty strand ponytail pullback with the said ponytail at the back looking more like a petrified rat clinging on for dear life.

Add to this those who think it’s hip to throw in phrases from the days of yore such as phat, gnarley, rad, wicked, right on, cool bananas, hundreds (the list is endless) know this, those listening in squirm with embarrassment for you.  The same applies to a woman who addresses friends as “girl.” As in “Wow girl you look fab today.” No, it’s just wrong coming from the mouth of a 40-odd year old and it’s certainly not dignified.

Having said that I have to admit that I too have had my glorious mutton moments, where I think I look pretty funky and rad until I am brought back to earth by my adult son saying “Jeez ma you look like an old goat in kid’s clothing.” Nothing like a good reality check. So guess it’s back to being hip to be square.
