DEAR Editor,-
It is with much concern that I read last week’s alarming headline ‘Taxi tensions simmer’ (SCH July 5) about the ongoing violence within our taxi industry.
As most are aware, public and private transport systems like South Africa’s taxi industry are vital components of every community.

Serving as an enabling entity to make life happen for workers, scholars and all who needs to move from home and back.
Thousands are dependent on this industry and therefore our government and citizens must do all in its power to support this vital daily service.
Whilst this macro economic industry continues to grow, regulation, law enforcement and basic micro management laws such as town planning, effective monitoring and enforceable systems must be implemented.
Daily nightmares suffered by ordinary citizens, and that of private road users, continue to negatively impact on our economy.
The safety and security of citizens who find themselves so helpless against the failure to act decisively must be ensured.
As must compliance within industries concerned to commit to a peaceful resolution that will benefit all, especially the most vulnerable.
I urge affected role players, the SAPS and municipalities, but more specifically, taxi industry leaders, to act decisively to commit to compliance and a solution-based approach which will save lives and strengthen the economy.
