CAR guards may annoy, irritate and aggravate motorists.
Sometimes they are just too helpful, hoping for a tip and making you feel guilty when you don’t have any spare change.
On that note I wonder how long it will be before they carry around a card machine for folk to swipe to give tips?

But sometimes they really earn their keep, and show that, yes, they can provide an important, if not absolutely vital, service.
One such car guard at a local shopping mall recently received a tip and effusive thanks from a concerned, confused and then crazily relieved motorist.
“Now the remote doesn’t work properly and so the alarm may go off, but I promise you I am not trying to steal this car,” said this motorist to the car guard as she approached her vehicle, armed with shopping bags, handbag, cellphone and car keys.
She was right. The remote didn’t work. No amount of point and press seemed to help. The key didn’t work either, despite trying it both ways (as in upside down).
There was some serious head scratching and befuddlement before the car guard finally found his voice.
“Mam, I think you got out of that car,” he ventured carefully, pointing to another vehicle, the exact same kind, just two parking bays away.
He was 100 percent right.
The two cars were the exact same make and colour. They were even the exact same amount of dirty.
“Heck, as I walked up to it, I thought it really needs a good wash … just like mine.”
She’s not known for her great sense of direction or ability to find her bearings, so car parks can be surprisingly stressful.
“To be honest I think I did okay, at least I was in the general direction of the vehicle, and the car guard didn’t laugh at me and say you ‘silly old bat’.”
