It must be said, it’s not often I am lost for words but this article which popped up in my inbox the other day touting the Afrikaans accent as the second sexiest in the world, thanks to its unique tones and Saffa slang, had me howling with laughter.
The slang part I get as there are just some words in the English language that do not do justice to a description. Think ‘snotklap’ now there’s a word that is short and sharp, to the point and in one fell swoop conveys to a South African what will happen if they step out of line. The English version is rather wordy and laborious in that “I will slap you so hard your snot will fly,” just does not have the same effect and is literally lost in translation.

But I digress, back to the Afrikaans accent. The poll conducted by Big 7 Travel says it’s the unique tones that make it hugely popular with many people across the globe. Now, this little gem has led me to wonder exactly what Afrikaans accent the poll refers to.
Could it be Cornel with the Western Cape ‘Malmesbury bray’ that gets people across the globe all hot under the collar as he whispers sweet nothings in their ear or the English speaking boytjie Marc from Durbs with his Seouth Effrican accent and phlegm clearing “g’s” that gets those toes curling in delicious anticipation.
Better yet it could be Brett recently returned from a six-month stint in the States who has now acquired that phoney mid-Atlantic drawl with a drawn-out twang that impresses no one local but himself and perhaps those taking part in said poll.
My money, however, is on Dirk from Delmas who speaks deliciously. He’s a sure-fire fit as he leans in and gruffly tells you “I luffs you stukkend my tertjie.”
