DEAR Editor:
I was wondering who gave birth to the idea of a pedestrian bridge over the R102 in Scottburgh – you know, the worthy after whom it will be named?
It seems to have taken forever to construct, will of course be well over budget and I wonder who is going to use it. Any ideas?

The whole project concept seems at odds with what is needed and best cost – the adjacent walkways are cement thick enough to support a bus and there is a 300mm gap between the kerb and the pavement where a wonderful display of weeds grew waist-high last summer – will the parks department be in a position to clean and keep tidy?
And if metal railings are to be fitted on the bridge, I’ll wager they will disappear in the first month, courtesy of local felons. But I suppose that will provide more work and another tender to replace.
The rumble strips are pretty good – the faster you go the less effect they have.
I’m no road engineer, but wouldn’t a pedestrian crossing with traffic lights (they seem to work well enough in Scott Street) have been far less expensive and more user friendly?
I wonder how many desperately needed low-cost houses/clinics/schools could have been built with the money this white elephant project is costing.
