A new recycling venture has been initiated by three Umdoni residents who recently established GreenCompanySA, which is quickly gaining momentum in Freeland Park and other areas of Umdoni.
The basic idea is to remove recyclable material from homes and businesses before it reaches the landfill.

This initiative provides a service at no cost to the ratepayer, with the intention to make the business self-sustainable and to encourage retailers to remove non-recyclables from their shelves in future.
Had this initiative been applied sooner, there might have been no need to extend the local landfill site.
In any case, the imminent amendment to the Waste Management Act will shortly declare the status quo as illegal.
The Scottburgh Mall had to shut down the collection area because of a general abuse of the facility.
This concept may reduce some of the problems associated with collection sites, and is expected to evolve over time into an efficient system.
We shouldn’t need a law to teach us responsibilities, especially when we live so close to the ocean.
However, we can help each other to leave a better environment for the next generation.
To be perfectly clear, GreenCompanySA is a business and is unapologetically so.
The reason for this is that it doesn’t have to stumble and depend on grants and gratuities to operate.
The practical aspects should be able to be taken care of in the normal course of running a business.
There are future ideas of turning garden waste into compost and converting waste into products but we have to start somewhere.
