EDITOR:
For the past several years the Clansthal Conservancy has repeatedly cleared the section of the R102 between the Mahlongwa and Mahlongwana rivers of litter and dumped household rubbish, builder’s rubble and garden services and householders' garden refuse.
It is an unedifying and continuous job to keep the R102 clean and safe.
We, with others in the local community, particularly Fran Reynolds, have liaised with the Provincial Department of Roads about cutting of the verges and the trimming back of the trees and shrubs.
We have been fairly successful in reminding the department's officials of their jobs but again, it is tedious and time consuming work.
At the beginning of October, I saw a crew of men beginning to not only trim the verges, but to clear and reestablish the drainage lines and to cut back the shrubs and bushes from the carriageway of the Clansthal section of the R102.
I found out that the people responsible for this fine work were from an Umkomaas company, Inyoni Homes owned by Nic and Odette Moussouris.
I, on behalf of the Clansthal community and I hope all users of this section of the R102 would like to thank Nic and Odette for their public spirit, their concern for the safety and convenience of pedestrians, cyclists, runners and vehicle drivers and for the impact they are making on the environment.
Together, we will continue to try and keep this small section of the R102 clean, safe and litter-free but we cannot do this alone.
We appeal to all the users of the R102 not to throw rubbish out of their vehicles and not to dump and tip illegally.
It really is not pleasant for our teams to pick up dumped dead dogs, used nappies and waste paper.
If you see someone dumping please stop and ask them not to.
If need be take a picture of their vehicle's registration number (if you feel it is safe to do so) and contact the Clansthal Conservancy at 083 556 3182.
We will forward the photo to Metro Law Enforcement who will prosecute the offender under the bylaws.
