DEAR Editor;
I refer to this week’s South Coast Herald and the letter about de-salination from Livvy Simpson.
My understanding is that the South Coast has ample water supplied by our two great rivers – the Umzimkulu and the Umtumvuna.
In fact, at the time of the big drought a few years ago I remember hearing/reading somewhere that we probably had enough to help Durban out.
This might have been a bit of an exaggeration but the fact is, we DO have water.
We just don’t have the infrastructure or the trained personnel or the political will to be able to supply a decent, constant supply to the area known as the Ugu District Municipality.
As we have all heard, funds have been embezzled or stolen or just not used properly.
No ongoing maintenance. No forward planning – either to replace ageing piping or to supply areas that have never had piped water.
It is ludicrous to spend hundreds of thousands on buying water trucks and all the expenses that go with the trucks when the funds could have been used on more permanent solutions.
Unfortunately, we have now got to the point where those trucks have become essential and even this service sounds like it’s in dire need of responsible management.
