DEAR Editor;
I have been following all the negative commentary on Facebook and WhatsApp regarding the management, or rather mismanagement of this district and wish to just add my comments.
I am a resident, owner and taxpayer staying in Uvongo.
There seems to be no political will or management competence at the Ugu municipal headquarters to serve its taxpayers.
I hope that the taxpayers will in the near future take over the management of their own interests and district, starting with financial discipline, waste management, road maintenance, sidewalk cleanliness, etc., but above all, water management.
Our water appears to be seriously polluted, not only the river and lagoon water, but our drinking water.
As can be observed on social media, many of our locals and tourists have fallen ill over the festive season.
Some chemists and hospitals are confirming this, but the best Ugu can offer, is ‘we are working on it’.
Well, I have stayed here for many years and the supply, as well as the purity our water, has deteriorated rapidly, with no positive prognosis in sight.
The only conclusion that one can come to, is that the people in charge of the development and maintenance of the infrastructure of Ugu are incapable of executing their accountability and should be replaced by taxpayers.
DR KOBUS NEL
RESPONSE FROM UGU DISTRICT
As you would know, the municipality is not beyond reproach.
Therefore we note the opinion being expressed under the subject matter and wish to categorically state that as an institution that operates within the realm of a democratic dispensation, we shall forever accept criticism and opinions being levelled against the manner in which we deliver our services.
But as we do so, we shall fundamentally never agree with the notion of propagating for public disobedience as being advocated by the learned doctor.
This notion is based on a narrow self-opinionated imagination which is seeking to render the institutions of government into a state of lawlessness.
As a form of accountability to our residents, we are always the first ones to concede to our shortcomings where applicable.
However, the writer has elected to go on a low point drive by making disparaging remarks for what he calls “mismanagement of the district”.
Yet it lacks critical details on a series of claims made, especially those relating to the tourists whom have allegedly fallen ill as a result of consuming our reticulated water.
Instead of seizing this moment by providing detailed and specific information which could assist the municipality in responding adequately, the writer chose to almost sound irrelevant.
We therefore call upon the learned doctor like all other citizens to be part of the initiative of building our district by making meaningful contribution, which will assist in decisively dealing with service delivery matters in the Ugu District.
