DEAR Editor;
I have read many articles in the newspapers about the nuisance vagrants on Scottburgh’s Scott Street, who pose as car guards and harass people for money all the time.
These vagrants are like vultures hanging around our vehicles, just waiting to attack people for money.
In most cases, the begging turns into harassment and people feel scared to step out of their vehicle and go into the nearby shops.
I firmly believe that one of the few ways we can get these people to stop harassing people in Scott Street, especially the elderly ones, is to stop giving them tips when they attempt to do their ‘car guarding’ duties.
No money means they might leave this town and try in another one.
I know many people feel sorry for them, but I believe that giving money to these vagrants, most of whom are known addicts, is just feeding their habits.
I was disgusted and slightly terrified to see how one vagrant verbally attacked an elderly man a week ago who refused to give her money.
What if something worse had transpired?
What if she chose to physically attack him… all for drug/alcohol money?
I suppose something serious would have to happen first before anyone realises that some of these people can actually be quite dangerous and that giving them money encourages their bad behaviour and could be making the situation worse.
