OPINION: ‘Water (and vehicles!) under troubled bridges’

Umzumbe bridge, travelling either north to Hibberdene or south from there, is a serious hazard.

DEAR Editor;

Last year you published my attempt to warn motorists of a huge pothole on the Anerley bridge which was a threat to drivers. Thankfully, it was repaired.

However, that same crater has now opened, so once again, motorists travelling south between Sea Park and Anerley, please be vigilant.

We now have a bridge problem, one that has always been a motorist’s headache due to potholes and uneven bridge connection strips.

The word night takes on a new meaning there, as night driving is an absolute nightmare!

Umzumbe bridge, travelling either north to Hibberdene or south from there, is a serious hazard.

In December, the South Coast Herald reported on a red vehicle which smashed the bridge railing and flew into the sand, with the driver and passengers apparently surviving but simply disappearing.

The bridge railing has been whacked a few times by trucks and the like.

Umzumbe lost water supply last Saturday, prompting our beach manager to again visit the bridge pipeline and photograph possible damage.

This was reported to Ugu as resulting water loss could also have affected northern areas.

We learned, via alternate sources, that last Saturday evening, a Toyota Tazz left the bridge.

Photos have emerged of possible occupants attending to the vehicle without any proven knowledge as to whether they were in fact, the occupants.

Our concern here is for the relevant authority to acknowledge this dangerous area.

Please fix the potholes and install speed bumps.

Put in signboards saying ‘High Accident Zone’ and ‘Speedbumps’ to warn motorists and to force a slowdown.
